Pioneering Industry’s first-ever ‘Integrated Digital Grid Enhancing Technologies’ (ID-GETs) for Software-based Automated Decision Support for Grid Planning & Operations

What is ‘ID-GETs’?

GridAstra is pioneering the first-ever 'Integrated Digital Grid Enhancing Technologies' (ID-GETs) software platform to facilitate a ‘Flexible Grid’ in order to mitigate the challenges of grid congestion. GridAstra’s patent-pending ID-GETs software platform models and provides automated decision support for optimally leveraging GETs-based solutions to come up with cost-effective ways to mitigate thermal overloads.

The software platform utilizes 3 types of GETs:

  • Wide Area Advanced Power Flow Control (APFC)

Optimally uses APFCs to reroute power flow from overloaded lines to underutilized lines by adjusting line impedance

  • Grid Topology Reconfiguration Control

Optimally identifies transmission switching in substations to redirect power flows away from congested lines

  • Sensor-less Dynamic Line Rating Control

Creates a Digital Twin to dynamically increase reliable line capacity without any hardware sensors in a scalable and cost-effective manner

By ‘unlocking’ the grid’s true capacity, the ID-GETs platform can accelerate interconnection and facilitate sustained operation of additional generation, storage, and large loads (e.g. data centers).

01. Point of Interconnection Capacity Analysis

This software provides the optimal locations in the grid for siting new generation projects (like wind, solar, gas, nuclear, storage, etc.) and large load projects (like data centers, industrial loads, commercial loads, etc.) based on the available grid capacity.

02. Steady State Cluster Study Analysis

This software models and evaluates the entire cluster of projects in the interconnection study cycle, along with the approved network upgrades (e.g.- from the previous study cycles). With that, it can predict the basecase and contingency violations (e.g.- thermal overloading of transmission lines, etc.) for each of the study cases.

03. GETs-based Thermal Overload Mitigation Analysis

This software models GETs like Advanced Power Flow Controllers (APFCs) and Grid Topology Reconfiguration, and autogenerates optimal feasible plans to reliably re-route power off overloaded lines onto under-utilized lines.

Key Outcomes for Our Customers
GridAstra’s technology is designed to enable faster interconnection of new generation, storage, and large load projects at significantly lesser costs.
01. Faster Interconnection Studies

By automating interconnection studies and providing automated intelligent decision support for mitigating thermal overloads using GETs, our software can significantly reduce study timelines.

02. Optimized Utilization of the Existing Grid

By automatically finding the optimal ways to re-route power from overloaded lines to under-utilized lines, our software can increase the overall utilization of the existing grid.

03. Lower Costs and Shorter Wait Times to Interconnect

With intelligent GETs-based planning, our software automatically identifies cost-effective and fast-to-deploy solutions, thereby significantly reducing reliance on costly and time-consuming network upgrades like building new transmission lines or reconductoring existing ones. This also helps minimize project withdrawals and re-studies, further accelerating project interconnection.

04. Compliance with Industry Regulations

GridAstra’s software performs analysis and generates reports in compliance with FERC Orders (like FERC Order-2023, FERC Order-1920, etc.) and NERC Standards (NERC TPL-001, etc.).

01. Ambient Adjusted Ratings (AAR) Analysis

This software considers ambient temperatures and day-night variations to compute real-time and forecasted Ambient Adjusted Ratings, in compliance with the FERC Order-881.

02. Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR) Analysis

This software computes Dynamic Line Ratings by building a reliable Digital Twin of the grid, integrating key aspects like grid conditions, weather data (temperature, wind, solar heating, cloud cover, etc.), and geospatial details (topography, vegetation, land cover, etc.), and asset model information. This sensor-less approach enables precise real-time and forecasted dynamic ratings of lines, in compliance with IEEE Standard-738.

03. Effective Dynamic Line Ratings (EDLR) Analysis

This software computes the Effective Dynamic Line Ratings by accounting for the ratings of elements topologically connected with a line (such as circuit breakers, switches, line traps, wave traps, transformers, CTs, PTs, etc.) along with the DLR, in compliance with NERC Standard FAC-008.

Key Outcomes for Our Customers
GridAstra’s sensor-less DLR technology is designed to find the latent capacity of lines in the grid, with high accuracy and significantly lower costs.
01. Maximized Utilization of the Existing Grid

GridAstra software’s comprehensive system-wide AAR and DLR analysis can provide a highly accurate assessment of a line’s true current-carrying capacity. When conditions are favorable, these dynamic line ratings can be much higher than the conservating static seasonal ratings (which are based on worst-case scenarios), thereby allowing maximum utilization of existing latent capacity.

02. Significant Reduction in Cost as Compared to Hardware Sensor-based DLRs

GridAstra’s software can reliably compute dynamic line ratings without the need for hardware sensors. This innovative approach significantly lowers capital expenses by eliminating costly sensor deployment and engineering work. Additionally, since no specialized field crew is needed for sensor maintenance, operational costs are also considerably reduced.

03. Matching Accuracy as that of Hardware Sensor-based DLRs

GridAstra’s software creates a highly reliable Digital Twin of the grid by integrating data from multiple domains including, power systems, geospatial, weather, and asset models. By combining physics-based power systems and fluid dynamics algorithms, along with AI/ML techniques, GridAstra accurately computes dynamic line ratings. Over the last one year we have field-tested our software across multiple lines with sensor-based DLRs, and our solution has achieved an overall match of 98-99% in the ratings results, ensuring trusted performance across all seasons.

04. Seamless integration with Energy Management Systems in Control Centers

GridAstra’s software can be easily integrated with Energy Management Systems (EMS) from various vendors, enabling its ratings results to be directly utilized by key operational applications such as SCADA, State Estimator, and Real-time Contingency Analysis, as well as in study applications, ensuring efficient and reliable grid operations.

05. Compliance with Industry Standards

GridAstra’s software ensures full compliance with key industry regulations, including FERC Order-881 for ambient adjusted ratings computation, IEEE Standard 738 for dynamic line ratings, and NERC FAC-008 for facility ratings. It also complies with the upcoming possible DLR requirements outlined in FERC’s ANOPR on DLR (Docket: RM24-6-000).
